Front Disc Brakes: Up Close View

The caliper squeezes brake pads on both sides of the rotor to slow down and stop rotation of the rotor which is attached to the wheel via the four studs shown. This vehicle hasn’t been in service for a while as suggested by surface rust on the rotor. A short distance of travel and application of the brakes a couple of times will eliminate all surface rust on the rotor, assuming it hasn’t been sitting for years without activity.
