Power Steering Pump Leak

In the case of this older vehicle, the power steering pump has developed a leak around the shaft. It allows fluid to drain onto the bottom of the unit and collect all manner of dust and dirt. During vehicle operation, the pulley occasionally flings drops of power steering fluid up onto the underside of the hood. This vehicle uses rosy pink transmission fluid for the power steering unit, and the color of the fluid is clearly seen adjacent to the shaft of the pump where the pulley is connected. Examination of frame members under the engine compartment showed drips of power steering fluid and lots of accumulated dust and dirt suggesting this has been a longstanding leak. Telltale signs of the pump leak were found on the underside of the hood during an examination.
